Off-Grid Solar for Beginners: The Complete Setup Guide

An off-grid solar system has four main parts: solar panels, a charge controller, a battery bank, and an inverter. This guide walks through each one and how to size them.

1. Solar panels — the generator

Panels convert sunlight into DC power. A 100W panel produces roughly 300–500Wh per day depending on your location and season. See the 100W output guide for detailed numbers.

2. Charge controller — the manager

Two types:

  • PWM (Pulse Width Modulation): simple and cheap, but wastes the voltage headroom of 24V+ panels on a 12V battery.
  • MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking): converts extra voltage into current, typically 20–30% more harvest in winter.

3. Battery bank — the storage

Deep-cycle batteries (AGM, gel, lithium) are required — starting batteries are not designed for deep discharge. Size your bank so daily usage is 30–50% of capacity (lithium can go deeper).

4. Inverter — AC power when you need it

Pick an inverter sized for your biggest load plus its surge. If you mainly run DC lights and USB, you may not need one at all.

Sizing in order

  1. Loads: list what you run and daily hours → system size calculator

  3. Panels: energy needed ÷ daily sun hours
  4. Controller: match voltage/current limits
